Central Library

The Central Library of the College was established in 1950 since the inception of the College. It houses more than 80,000 books and subscribes to about 20 journals and periodicals. Spread over an area of 4,000 sqft, it provides home lending of books, reading room facility and reference services. Photocopying facility for PG students are also available. Apart from the Central Library, each department also has its own Seminar Library.

Lending Section of the Library


  • The Library has subscribed to UGC Inflibnet-NLIST network. It also has institutional membership of the British Council Library, Kolkata. Both provide a wide number of e-rources available through the digital platform. Through proper utilization of these services, the number of accessible E-books stands at 1,87,000 and the number of accessible E-journals stands at 1,13,000. Teachers, Research Scholars and PG students can avail such facility. The central library also has OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) facility.
  • For the students, an air-conditioned Reading Room with seating capacity of 40 students is operational for some time now. They can also access internet from two dedicated computer machines kept in the Reading Room. Library staff always help the users to know how to use the Library Catalogue and OPAC and how they can get their required books & documents from the library. Printed Library Rules also provided to each student user at the time of giving membership to them.
  • Career oriented magazines are kept in the reading room for the benefit of the students. Student’s representatives are also a part of the Advisory Committee of the Library

Library Cards

Two Library Cards are issued to each newly admitted 1st Year student tentatively in the first week of September. Students moving to 2nd Year or 3rd Year needs to renew their Library cards each year. One library card is issued to PG students after one month of admission. However, no renewal of card is necessary for PG students as it is meant for two years.

Issuing of Books and Fines

A degree students may borrow 2 books at a time, for a period of 15 days. A student, keeping a book beyond 15 days without renewal, will be charged a fine of 25 paisa for every extra day. Students appearing for the University Examinations are advised to deposit the books at a proper time after the examinations are over, failing which they will be charged a fine of Rs.1/- per day.
